Culture Around the Corner

It’s not difficult to find culture in the Triangle. The Raleigh area is filled with talented artists and a variety of places to view their work. Many art galleries are located in places you wouldn’t think to look. Here are a few fantastic galleries in the area.

The Fish Market

Operated by the NC State University College of Design, The Fish Market is known for its exhibits of student work. Many of the exhibits showcased here are able to be viewed on “First Fridays” downtown, when many businesses stay open late, serve beverages, and put on special events the first Friday of each month. The Fish Market is a cozy little gallery on the corner of Fayetteville and Hargett. Keep your eyes peeled, though, because it’s easy to miss, as it’s tucked away down a flight of stairs.

Artspace

Artspace is a visual arts gallery with artist spaces woven throughout. There are a number of artists in residence that visitors are often able to interact with while viewing their art in the gallery. Many local artists display work at Artspace as well as artists not from the area. The non-profit space provides a variety of in-house art programs for all ages in addition to free community outreach programs for those that would otherwise be unable to participate due to cost or transportation.

Litmus

Similar to Artspace, Litmus is a gallery that features local art both by their selected featured artists and their artists in residence. Located in the Warehouse District, they provide studios for workspace and display of artist work. The gallery is across from the Amtrak station on the back side of the Depot shopping center.

Lee Hansley Gallery

1053 E Whitaker Mill Rd., Suite 105

Recently relocated to Dock 1053, Lee Hansley Gallery specializes in contemporary American painting, photography, sculpture, and fine prints. They provide consultation, appraisal, and curatorial services and has an exclusive Collector’s Club. With rotating exhibits and featuring over 35 artists, there is always something new to check out.

ArtSource Fine Art

Located in Midtown Raleigh, ArtSource has been open for over 25 years. The gallery features over 75 artists from the Southeast region and hosts 3-4 exhibitions per year in addition to their rotating featured artists. ArtSource has consultation, leasing, and framing services and the gallery is available for rental.
