Make Selling During the Holidays Merry and Bright

Turkey Day is only a couple wake-ups away with Christmas and New Year’s following quickly after. While it is a wonderful time of the year to celebrate with family and friends and enjoy the festive spirit the season brings, it isn’t the most popular time to put your house on the market. However, if a holiday home sale is what your after, there are certainly steps you can take to make the experience merry and bright.

Pick a professional
Selling your home during the winter isn’t the ideal time to do it on your own. Seek out a real estate agent who knows your neighborhood and housing market well and has a sound strategy for quickly attracting a qualified buyer.

Present the right price
Work with your listing agent to identify the right price for your home. There may be less competition on the market, but you still want to catch homebuyers’ attention right away to score a showing.

Tone down the tinsel
Most people like to decorate their homes during the holidays, but winter home sellers should consider space over Santa figurines. Your holiday decorations may be beautiful, but to homebuyers extra garland, ornaments and candles may seem more like clutter. Less seasonal décor is certainly more if you want buyers to see your home’s true potential.

Offer more showing options
Holiday homebuyers are often more motivated and serious about finding a home before a certain deadline—think about those who may be relocating for a job or foreign buyers who have limited time in the states before they must make a decision. Make sure you offer a flexible showing schedule to accommodate them as they head out on their home tours.

Keep it cozy
Make sure your home is always warm and inviting. Don’t let the temperatures dip indoors during the day while you are at work. Buyers will want to walk into a home that is comfy and cozy to escape the wintery chill.

Curb appeal still counts
No matter the time of year you sell, your home’s curb appeal will matter. Buyers want to see a well-maintained home and presentable yard in spring, summer, fall and winter. Add a fresh coat of paint to the front door, clean away cobwebs and rake up leaves. Make sure the homebuyer’s first impression is a good one.
